Print Magazines: Tatler CSP case study

General

1) Based on the trailer, what type of people produce and read Tatler? Consider demographics and
psychographics. Most people that read tatler are posh upper class people because they have the money and wealth to buy it monthly.

2) Look at the Tatler Media Pack 2018. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?The editor of Tatler introduces the magazine as a fabulous and sensational magazine.Which makes the reader feel like the magazine will be special.

3) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?The age group of tatler would be at an average of 41.The most common gender is females.The ABC1 percentage would probally be around 83%.The Household income rounds up to about £261,572 anually.The percentage of the people from london and the south east that read tatler would be around about 70%.These details show that the average amount of people that read tatler would be older females and upper class people

4) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?Tatler readers agree with fashion I often buy fashion products after seeing things advertised in magazine.843 million was spent during the past year on fashion.


5) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the pyschographic groups who read Tatler?The special additions are all guides.This would show the consumers that Tatler can show you how to do anything.


Media language
1) How many of the 12 magazine cover key conventions feature on this edition of Tatler?
Title of publication-shows the big title in the top three.
Central image-Shows a modern type of lady who is wear really expensive jewellery and an alluring golden dress.
Name tags-Georgina Bevan and James Corden.
2) What is the font choice used in the title and what does this choice connote? The font of the title is serif which shows that it is sophisticated.

3) What font is used for the cover lines? What does that choice connote?The font choice for the cover lines is san serif.This connotes that the cover lines are just meant as a joke and they are not being serious.

4) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?The cover lines have a lot of gossip which the consumers might be interested in.

5) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?The background is a green natures area which connotes that this magazine is quite fresh.

6) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)There is a young white model who is wearing a golden couture dress with a exquisite set of pearls.Her eyes are looking straight at the camera which connotes that she is focused and she is look at the audience.

Representations

1) What different groups of people are represented on the cover? (Look at the image and text/cover lines)Georgina Bevan is represented as a posh white model.James corden is connoted as a successful British celebrity in America.


2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?It suggest that rich people dont need to wear clothes because they wear lots of jewllery and new accessories "oops,all my clothes fell off"! 

3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?The stereotypes of this magazine would be that model is very posh because she is is wearing a rich dress with stunning pearls.


4) Are there any misrepresentations or under-representations of groups? What might this suggest about the target audience?

5) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?

The preferred reading would be that this magazine is for upper class people and this show that they are rich and that they have a high disposable income.

The oppositional reading would be that the model is very skinny which connotes that to become a model you have to fit and attractive.




Social and cultural context

1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')It doesnt talk about normal working class people.

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?This suggest that some people are rich and wealthy.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017?Black people,old people.

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler. What issues or problems are regularly featured in Tatler?This is a subversive magazine cover because it is meant for woman.The second one shows by the cover line that she is part of the concervetive party are the richest party out of all the other ones.
